Where you include any images in your essay, thesis or work, you can describe them as figures. You will need to include them in reference. Figures need to be numbered e.g. Figure 1. or Fig.1 or Figs. 1,2,3. and captioned (described), place caption directly under the image. Number all Figures in the order they first appear in the text.
The full reference should direct the reader to the source (eg the book or website) from which the item was taken. You should provide an in-text citation for any photographs, images, tables, diagrams, graphs, figures or illustrations that you reproduce in your work. The citation would normally be given after the title of the figure, table.
Check that for each in-text citation in your essay or dissertation there is a corresponding entry in the reference list, unless it is taken from an unrecoverable source. Make sure that you allow yourself plenty of time for doing your references and that you proofread the reference list before you submit your assignment; unnecessary mistakes can cost you marks.
Do not confuse quotations with citations. A citation is the practice of referring to the work of other authors in the text of your assignments. A direct quotation is where you copy the exact words used by an author and place them unaltered directly into your work. Direct quotations need to be in quotation marks as shown in the example here.
